The Isle of Lewis
Lewis and Harris refer to two different parts of the same island which is the most densely populated in the Western Isles. Tourism, like the rest of the west coast, is a major employer and Stornoway with two-thirds of the Western Isles population is a busy transport hub. The town has excellent transport links to the mainland with both a ferry terminal and airport providing sailings and flights to Ullapool, Inverness, Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen.
Stornoway has a number of primary schools, a large secondary school and a further education college as well as a small nursing campus run by Stirling University. The headquarters of Comhairle Nan Eilean Siar; the local authority, is in the town along with a number of other public sector bodies and Stornoway also has a strong television and radio presence through the BBC.
The town has a range of small-scale traders to supermarkets and recognised national retailers. Lewis and Harris have numerous bed and breakfasts, guesthouses, hotels and restaurants while a reduced fishing fleet sails out of Stornoway and a number of other provincial harbours. The Harris Tweed industry has two major finishing mills in Shawbost and Stornoway, there is several freshwater and sea fish farms and a number of people are currently employed in the Arnish yard building wind turbines for export.
