Tiree is a very flat and fertile island, known internationally for it’s magnificent beaches, rolling waves and highest annual hours of sunshine in the UK. All these prove a magnet for hundreds of watersports enthusiasts who flock to the island throughout the year.

While this has added to the many tourism-based opportunities on the island and has seen an increase in house building, Tiree’s economy still depends largely on agriculture and fishing.

The island, which is 7 miles long, has a population of approx 800. It is divided into several townships and has a primary and secondary school, post offices, garages numerous small arts and craft workshops, galleries and a rural development complex.

 The main town is Scarnish which is close to the main ferry terminal and supports shops and a bank.

It has a number of good hotels and an increasing number of restaurant and cafes which specialise in local produce.

Transport links with the mainland are via the ferry port of Oban or by flying direct to Glasgow from Tiree Airport.
