Ullapool was founded in 1788 as a herring port. The harbour is still the centre of the town, used as a fishing port, yachting haven and ferry port.

The route to Stornoway is one of the busiest Caledonian MacBrayne routes and the village boasts a swimming pool and fitness centre, pubs, restaurants and hotels.
