Appin

The villages of Appin and Port Appin make up a close-knit community and, although just within the Argyll and Bute Council boundary, is a half-hour drive from both Oban (south) and Fort William (north).

The leading industries are forestry, crofting and hospitality. The community shares three hotels, with plans afoot for another to be built in 2008. There is also a crafts shop, a village store and a cafe. However, the most important commercial industry in the area is Glensanda in Morvern, on the opposite bank of Loch Linnhe. This superquarry’s drilling and blasting location is 520 metres above sea level and provides tremendous employment opportunities for the area.

A foot passenger ferry runs from Port Appin to the Isle of Lismore and Glensanda also uses the Port Appin slipway to transport the local workforce.
