Uist

The islands of North Uist and South Uist sandwich the small isle of Benbecula and while they seem to be split, are joined by a main road and causeways. Public transport is served by a bus service. An airport on Benbecula links the islands to the mainland and ferry ports in Lochmaddy, Castlebay and Berneray provide links to Oban, the Isle of Skye and the Isle of Harris.

The largest industry on the Uist islands is crofting, where crofts tend to be larger than on other islands. Fishing is also an important industry to the island. On North Uist, almost every vessel is under 12 metres in length. Despite a declining population, tourism in the Uists is on the increase, generally. The Uists and Benbecula remain a stronghold for the native language, Gaelic.
