Living in Galloway
By road the A77 takes you north to Ayr, Kilmarnock and Glasgow and the A75 goes east to wards Gretna, Carlisle and the M6 with its link to the national motorway network. Stranraer is the terminus of the Glasgow South Western line and Glasgow Prestwick its nearest airport. Glasgow is just over two hours away when you feel like sampling all that a big city has to offer but with the ferry terminal at Cairnryan on the doorstep, Belfast is only a three hours’ sail away and many people from both sides of the channel enjoy the change of scenery and a weekend away.
In the heart of Stranraer is the four-storey ruin of the Castle of St John from the 16th century and Stranraer serves as the market town and social hub for many smaller communities.
It is also the educational centre with Stranraer Academy and there is also the Stranraer campus of Dumfries and Galloway College.
They say there are more than quarter of a million books in Wigtown; which was officially designated as Scotland’s National Book Town in 1998. Since then the annual Wigtown Festival has grown and grown, now offering more than 200 events across the age groups and involving music, film, theatre and the arts across its 10-day celebration.
The festival has seen the town develop more hospitality-based businesses and other ventures.
The seafood industry is celebrated with a Stranraer Oyster Festival and a food and drink trail.
Working in Galloway
Tourism and the ferry terminal are main employers in the area with tourism and hospitality playing an increasing role, as does education and the public sector plus renewables. The traditional land and agricultural sector jobs are also to the fore. There is also a small but significant number of people who choose a longer commute as the pay-off for lower house prices and the quality of life for young families in this glorious location.
With Stranraer the destination of choice for local people as their shopping centre, expect to find plenty of retail jobs plus the growing number in Wigtown thanks to the book festival.
