Living in Sutherland
Here’s something to throw into conversation – did you know that John Lennon used to go on his holidays to Sutherland? The Scottish side of his family had a croft near Durness. He even took Yoko Ono along one time. Just as McCartney wrote The Long and Winding Road about the route to his farm in Kintyre, Lennon wrote In my Life when he was in Sutherland in celebration of his love for his extended family and Yoko.
Sutherland is that surprising. Please don’t write it off as that under-populated bit after Inverness and before the sea.
Right now a lot more people are realising what a fantastic place it is thanks to the North Coast 500. This route was set up as our answer to America’s Route 66; a road by-passed by the new inter-state routes leaving rural communities economically isolated until the old road’s reinvention as a tourist route. The North Coast 500 is a circuit from Inverness which takes in Sutherland along the way.
North Highland College is part of the University of the Highlands and Islands with campuses across the area. Its rural studies centre is as good as you will find anywhere with its courses in veterinary nursing and game keeping and its equestrian centre.
The college also has its own Burghfield House in Dornoch which is open to paying customers as a training venue for catering and hospitality students; Ross House next to the Royal Dornoch Course is home to the golf management honours degree course.
Dornoch has its spectacular championship golf course and throughout Sutherland smaller communities like Golspie, Helmsdale, Tongue, Brora and Kinlochbervie each have their own unique beauty and unique history – one which often includes tales of The Clearances.
Inverness is the nearest major city with a link into the main UK rail network with the Far North Railway line serving the eastern side of Sutherland. Inverness has the major air links with Wick John O’Groats Airport having flights to Edinburgh and Aberdeen.
Working in Sutherland
Tourism, with an emphasis on the outdoor, either sporting or wildlife, public sector, service industries and the utilities are the main employers in the area along with land-based employment in agriculture, forestry and sporting estates. There is a strong emphasis on growing quality and niche tourism projects along with renewable energy which is emphasised in the value placed on courses at North Highland College.
