Living in the Black Isle
Tell people you are moving to live and work on the Black Isle in the Highlands and it all sounds a bit, well, sinister. Instead, tell them you are going to live on a peninsula where the farmland is so rich and fertile that it looks black when viewed from a distance.
You could also tell them that surrounded on three sides by the sea it gives a climate that produces fantastic crops and livestock. This means the kind of first-class artisan food and drink produce that would make a foodie sitting in the middle of a big city weep for joy. It also means that the Black Isle Show is one of the most prominent events in the Scottish farming calendar.
This is an ‘island’ which is close to the major regional centre, Inverness, and its wide range of shopping and entertainment plus its airport and rail links.
What the Black Isle does share with islands that are totally surrounded by water is a great sense of community in its towns Cromarty and Fortrose and villages Conon Bridge, Muir of Ord, Munlochy, Avoch, Rosemarkie, Tore, North Kessock and Culbokie.
