Living in Huntly
Do you want to live somewhere with room to roam? That’s Huntly.
When this small Aberdeenshire town decided it wanted to update its image and ‘re-brand’ itself with a new logo and promotions it chose ‘room to roam’ as its new motto, from a line taken from a poem by Huntly-born author, George MacDonald, which also was the inspiration for the song by Mike Scott of The Waterboys.
It was an inspired choice; the striking old town centre with its planned town lay-out by the Duke of Gordon is now a conservation area and it is set amidst the fine Aberdeenshire countryside.
This is the setting for so many outdoor pursuits: a golf course, Nordic ski centre, miles of pathways and fantastic salmon and trout fishing on the Rivers Deveron and Bogie. Room to roam becomes ‘Room to run’ with an annual 10k and 5k and children’s races held annual, attracting runners form all over Scotland to enjoy the routes through such wonderful countryside.
The town has two supermarkets and plenty of independent local shops. This is a rich farming area and on the first Saturday of the month a farmers’ market is held in The Square with fresh and artisan produce.
This is the home of Deans of Huntly, one of the leading producers of shortbread.
Huntly is on the railway line between Aberdeen and Inverness and is roughly half way between the two for times when you want to feel the buzz of a big city with its shopping, entertainment and culture. Both cities have airports plus ferry services from Aberdeen, and both have Caledonian Sleeper trains to London.
With its own primary school and high school, The Gordon Schools, Huntly is a great place to raise a family.
