Living in Inveraray
Back in the 18th century the Duke of Argyll decided to knock down his old castle and build a magnificent new Georgian mansion-cum-castle. Once this was complete he thought that his neighbouring town looked a bit, well, scruffy alongside so he knocked that down and rebuilt it.
Today visitors flock to the Royal Burgh of Inveraray to appreciate the third Duke’s good taste and enjoy the gleaming white-painted town on the shore of Loch Fyne, a sea loch.
Inveraray was the seat of power for Argyll and the duke built a magnificent court house and huge inns to accommodate all who had to travel to attend court of do business with his grace. The town is steeped in history and those inns are still welcoming travellers to this day. Tourism plays an important part in the town’s economy.
Today the seat of power has shifted down the road to Argyll and Bute Council headquarters at Lochgilphead but Inveraray still remains a centre for the surrounding countryside; a modern supermarket, primary school and industrial estate have been carefully tucked away along with an industrial estate. The result is a friendly and very busy little town with a strong sense of community and top class pipe band and shinty team.
Inveraray was chosen by the Dukes of Argyll as their base because of its geographical location and it is at the heart of the road network for Argyll, giving easy access to Oban, on to the Hebridean islands, to Lochgilphead and the Kintyre Peninsula and Campbeltown.
In under an hour-and-half you can be in the centre of Glasgow, a world-class city with all it has to offer in culture, entertainment, shopping and transport links.
Within minutes you can be in the breath-taking countryside of Argyll, or out on Loch Fyne in a boat.
Oh, and if his standard is flying from the flagstaff on top of the castle, it means the Duke is home.
