Frequently Asked Questions
To live in Argyll and Bute is to live by the water, on the coast or inland.
There are 23 inhabited islands, mainly the Inner Hebrides but also one in Loch Lomond and others in the Clyde.
It has a longer coastline than France, thanks to the number of peninsulas, sea lochs and islands; everywhere is less than 12 miles away from seawater. In Argyll and Bute 80 per cent of the population lives within 1km of the coast and 17 per cent of the population lives on islands.
More than half live in communities that have less than 3,000 people.
Local government boundary changes over the years mean the area goes from Helensburgh, within the Glasgow commuter belt, to the Isle of Tiree which gets such fantastic Atlantic waves that is hosts its own surfing festival.
That is why it is such a great place to live and work because of the variety this creates.
The main towns are Oban, Helensburgh, Inveraray, Dunoon, Rothesay, Lochgilphead and Campbeltown - each with its own distinct personality. Each is a hub for shopping, socialising, education, sporting and cultural activities. Shall we just say there have been known to be instances of rivalry in matters relating to shinty, football and pipe bands...
As you would expect tourism is a major employer across the spectrum, as are public sector jobs in local government and healthcare.
Fishing and aquaculture play their part and Oban takes pride in its reputation as the Seafood capital of Scotland; you will see plenty of continental lorries heading for home laden with seafood from the islands.
Whisky is another major export from Argyll from the Peaty Laphroaig of Islay to the mellow Springbank of Campbeltown.
Covering such a wide area where the sea cuts into mainland landscape and with so many inhabited islands Argyll and Bute has a strong maritime employment sector with companies like Caledonian MacBrayne and Argyll Ferries.
The Oban branch of the West Highland Line links the town to Glasgow along a route considered one of the finest rail journeys in the world.
There are always jobs within the transport industry: Argyll and Bute has only three trunk roads but 11 railway stations; six airports with scheduled services (more than 20 if you count airstrips) more than 30 ferry terminals and no one seems quite sure how many helipads.
If you are keen on working in the outdoors rather than in the office you’ll find there are many agriculture, fishing and forestry jobs in Argyll and Bute. It takes a certain amount of effort to maintain the natural beauty Argyll and Bute is known for and with the jobs listed here you could be part of helping keep it that way. An eastern part of the area also falls within the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park.
Organisations like Mowi Scotland are always on the lookout for new team members. They farm salmon in the remote and pristine waters of the Western Highlands and provide jobs and support fragile rural economies in some of the most remote communities in the country.
