Living in Lochgilphead
Lochgilphead is the administrative heart of Argyll and Bute with the council headquarters at Kilmory Castle on the outskirts of town.
It is also home to a major industrial estate and there is also a hospital in the town.
The whole reason the town has grown is its ideal location at the head of Loch Gilp, close to the Crinan Canal and as near as dammit in the centre of Argyll and Bute. Argyll and Bute is a sprawling collection of peninsulas and islands from the Clyde to the Inner Hebrides and getting people together for an actual, physical, meeting can involve some impressive logistics. It can be a three-day round trip during the winter ferry timetable for someone to travel from one of the smaller islands to Kilmory to attend a council meeting.
Lochgilphead has an impressive new joint campus comprising primary and high schools and a community sports centre which takes children from primary schools in a wide surrounding area.
The central location also works in people’s favour when they are not in work – it means they are within easy travelling distance of all that Argyll has to offer in terms of entertainment, culture, shopping and the wonderful outdoors. And who wouldn’t want to drive along a shore road to get to work every day? Which ever road you drive into Lochgilphead upon, the scenery is stunning.
